When Audrie Matthews finally agrees to meet the adult son she left behind as an infant in Jamaica, she opens a Pandora's Box of trouble. She learns that her son, who is now a young Baptist minister, has left troubles of his own behind. She returns to Jamaica with him to shield him from the consequences of his actions and is taken back on a journey to the past that is as complex as it is revealing. In this novel, The Road to Timnath, which is told in the first and third person voice, Audrie Matthews meets her son, James John Whitehead, the third, and is forced to once again experience the horror of his father's murder. This young man, who is known as Jimmy, looks and sounds so much like his dead father that at first Audrie struggles with sexual attraction to him. When he introduces his fiancée to her and suggests that they get married in front of her, he is trying to make up for their years of separation. Audrie leaps at the opportunity, believing that her involvement in the wedding plans will wipe away her inappropriate responses to her son. She and her best friend Myrna pay for a small intimate ceremony and send the couple off for a week in the Bahamas. While they are gone, Audrie receives a call from Jimmy's great Uncle. He reveals that Jimmy's childhood best friend, who is the granddaughter of the family's housekeeper, has given birth to a baby girl and named Jimmy as the father. The journey home is a journey back to the turn of the twentieth century when the family patriarch, Rev. James John Whitehead, the first, was conceived as a result of the rape of a local teenager by the middle-aged Scottish pastor of the local Moravian church.

The road to Timnath provides readers with a tantalizing read from cover to cover.Skilfully crafted ,it is really the story of our ancestors combined with the present generation in a dynamic fashion.Sylvia took what was 'sacred and complex' and dressed it in simple garb by using the lives of very ordinary, ordinary people.I enjoyed the captivating rhythm of the book made possible by numerous proverbs and wise sayings.Mind you, these were not haphazardly thrown in but cleverly executed to provide food for the soul! Sometimes, there was no time to catch your breath as the story line moves you along in deep drama and suspense.Grateful to you ,that I made a journey into the sun with this delightful read.!

This is Rixon Campbell Jr. or many call me by the name "Tarikh Elisbinus". Reading the first pages of this book really put a smile on my face, being proud that my own aunt published this book that she has worked so hard to write. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys books which speaks about culture and knowing your roots.
Review of Sylvia Gilfillian’s debut novel The Road to Timnath

Like many other great West Indian novels, The Road to Timnath starts off from the perspective of the West Indian immigrant who looks at her life abroad, and tries to reconcile it with her life back home. Thankfully there is so much more to this rich expose of the mores and customs of old time and modern day Jamaica. The work pulls us into the heart of deep rural Jamaica and tells the largely untold stories of characters that only a West Indian country boy like myself could readily recognize. Though deeply rooted in the Jamaican context, themes of this novel are universal and an authentic exploration of the human condition. Unwanted pregnancies, sexual abuse, unrequited love, obsession, class and colorisim, are just some of the ground that is covered by a narrative intermittently told in Jamaican. This is an important, ground breaking work that leaves you wondering what will become of the people that we met on its pages, long after we reluctantly put it down because there were no more words to read.
